10 Tips for Academic Success

1. Study Every Day

Different study methods work for different people. You should establish a study routine in a space free of distraction and become familiar with the study method that suits you best. Make a to-do list every morning and strive to complete it before the day ends. Remember the Carnegie Rule: For every one hour spent in class, 2–3 hours will be dedicated to reviewing the material covered in that class.

2. Ask Questions

Get used to asking questions. It demonstrates that you are a self-motivated learner who wants to complete the task thoroughly. Put the negative pressure of asking “stupid” questions aside. Sometimes the only way to really understand something is to ask.

3. Use a Planner

Using a planner will help you manage your time better and stay organized. Write down homework assignments, projects, tests, and even family events, so you can plan ahead and avoid any conflicts.

4. Manage Your Time

Set specific academic and personal goals. Create a semester schedule recording major events in a planner or calendar that contribute to reaching your goals. Use Post-It notes or phone reminders to keep you on track with upcoming school work, tests and readings. Know when to say “no” to invitations that may distract you from the task at hand. Remember that procrastinating only makes the process harder.

5. Talk with Teachers

Your teachers care about your performance in their classes. Talk to your teachers if you need help with homework, or material covered in a lesson. They will notice your effort and may take your perseverance into account when determining your grade. The more a teacher knows you the better, especially if you intend to ask them for a letter of recommendation.

6. Get Involved

Join sports and clubs to meet new people and pursue a leadership role. Look at involvement as your own personal development outside of the class room. You will learn more about your community, school, and school staff through your involvement. Also make sure to encourage your parent/guardian to attend Open Hose and Back to School Nights with you.

7. Care For Yourself

A successful student is both mentally and physically healthy. Eating breakfast will give you energy for your morning classes and getting 7-8 hours of sleep is a must. Establishing these healthy habits now will serve you well in high school, college, and beyond.

8. Get Help

If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask! Many teachers/tutors are available before school starts, during lunch, and after school ends. Talk to your teachers if you need help with homework, or material covered in class. They will notice your effort. This could make the difference in your grade.

9. Use Your Resources

Search engines like google and yahoo provide endless amounts of information for research papers, math problems, and science experiments. One of your greatest resources is your counselor. Your counselor can support your plan to graduate from High School and get to college. They will also have information of any workshops, programs, and scholarships that your school/community offers.

10. Have FUN

Remember that you are an individual with hobbies and interests other than your academics. Make it a habit to reward yourself after you have finished the task at hand.
